Canton Ballet under the artistic direction of Cassandra Crowley, will host its annual competition and showcase for choreographers who work on pointe. $1000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the first place winner with additional cash awards for second and third place finishers chosen by the distinguished panel of judges.
An initial selection panel will evaluate the work submitted on videotape. The work submitted may be an uncompleted work in progress, a completed work in a studio setting or an actual performance of the piece. Costuming and props and sets should be kept to a minimum. The emphasis of the showcase is on the choreography and whether or not it is able to stand alone without the embellishments of theater. However, every work auditioned, finished or not, must be at least 5 minutes in length. Each piece that is presented for evaluation must be the work that will be performed at the showcase. Choreographers may audition only one ballet (5 to 12 minutes in length). The ballet must have been created within the past three years. The selection panel will choose seven works to be presented in the final round before the panel of judges. Judges will include international master teacher Laura Alonso and well-known master teacher Jon Rodriguez. Jurors will announce their decisions that evening and prizes will be awarded.
Ballets will be presented without sets, special lighting or elaborate costuming. Choreographers are responsible to provide their own dancers. Please call 330.455.7220 for more information.
